A Contractor was at the Winery yesterday and asked "Where do you get your flavors from?" Now at first blush a winemaker might respond from the soil, the Sun and the weather. But then I realized this fellow was being quite literal. He thought that flavors were something you purchased and put into the wine like a margarita mix.
I thought how sad it is that our culture has been so poisoned by mass produced food and artificial flavoring that the concept of fresh, local, natural and artisinal are foreign to some people. Now to be fair to my contractor friend I'm guilty of creating some of the confusion. Declaring the wine to have flavors of citrus, melon or herbaceous, etc. Not flavors people are used to hearing when describing grapes.
At the end of the day we had a glass of hard cider together and admired his work. After a few sips he gave me the ultimate compliment and I could see he was beginning to understand when he declared "This is good @%#!"
